Peter and Janine

Peter and Janine were married in April 2006 in Torquay.  They have lived at their South Devon home 'Chavara' for five years,  and have worked hard developing the yard, putting in a school, horse-walker, drive with parking and modernising the stables & paddocks.
The couple have bought four horses in building and producing their team, and Janine rides owners' horses alongside her own.
Working hard in their respective professions in order to sustain their passion for Eventing,  their time is constantly 'juggled' between work and horses !

JANINE JANSEN

Janine learned to ride before she could walk, and started hunting at the age of four on a lead rein.
As a teenager she joined the West Hants Pony Club, and soon became a keen member of the Tetrathlon Team which involves: running, swimming, shooting and cross-country riding. When Janine was 16 she worked in an Eventing and Dressage yard producing Event horses, competing two horses to Intermediate level, and was considered for 'Young Riders'.
In 1994 Janine decided to further her academic career and got herself into Cambridge University where she read English and French.  -   During her three years at University,  she competed as a member of the University Riding Club, which she captained from 1996 - 97.  Janine won Team Gold at the National Champoinships and Individual Silver at the Europeans in France in '96.
After graduation, Janine decided to pursue a career in Broadcast Journalism, gaining her first job with the BBC in Jersey.  It was here that she trained with Carl Hester.
At the turn of the Millennium, Janine returned to Devon taking up the post as a presenter and reporter for BBC Spotlight, gaining numerous awards for her journalism.
For the next five years she was restricted to competing her one horse which she kept at livery at the yard of Mrs Geraldine Mills. It was whilst based at Gerry's yard, she was given the opportunity to establish and produce 'Granntevka Prince' from a 3 YO, which Gerry and her husband David had bred at home. This young horse then went to the yard of Lucy Wiegersma where he competes, winning the Pavo 6 YO class in 2006, and more recently,  Blenheim in 2009.
Janine is now concentrating on competing her team at a higher level, with expert training from Alice Peternell in Dressage, and she attends regular showjumping lessons with Justin Tuff and Claire Rushworth.

PETER HOLDGATE

Picture
Peter joined the Royal Navy in 1967 straight from school, where he trained to be a professional photographer. -  He Served in Hong Kong from '72 to '75 with Joint Service Intelligence on secondment to the U.S. Consulate during the Vietnam war.  On his return, Peter decided to attain his 'Green Beret'  and join Commando Forces and the Royal Marines.  He saw 'action' all over the world with the Commandos, but is probably best noted for the iconic picture of the Royal Marine 'yomping' towards Stanley during the Falklands War. This picture was transmitted all around the world, and a 12 foot statue of this image now stands imposingly on Southsea seafront in Portsmouth.
On leaving the Services, Peter set up his own photographic business, and was later appointed as the Picture Editor of the Evening Herald in Plymouth.
It was because of his background, that he became one of the first journalists allowed into Afghanistan's war zone. Peter is now the Executive Picture Editor of South West Media Group, a part of the Daily Mail Group, which owns westcountry regional newspapers, including the Western Morning News.
As well as his profession, he has the 'other job' of managing and maintaining the yard at 'Chavara'.  This demands a very early start every day in order to ensure that all the 'horsey' chores are done, before heading off to the office.
Returning home in the evening, Peter helps Janine with what ever needs to be done before relaxing !  -  He maintains that the manual,  and very different work around the yard not only keeps him fit, but in many ways, is very therapeutic
Peter has always been a keen sportsman, playing representative Rugby, Water-polo and running Triathlons.  -   In 2008,  he came 7th in the first ever 120 kilometers race in 24 hours, Extreme Ultra Marathon acoss the Namibian Desert, in Southern Africa.
